When audiophiles belabor the status quo, I just don't get 'em. The offerings available today in the lower-priced sector are more attractive than ever before. Case in point? Alon Wolf's Magico Mini, remember that? ScanSpeak Revelator tweeter, ATD Titanium-sandwich mid/woofer, stacked ply cabinet, $20,000/pr.

Now consider Chris Hoff's BPT Cirrus which...
...starts at $2,695/pr. Its Raal 70-20XR is every bit the Revelator's equal. Many would consider it superior. The Audio Technology C-Quenze 18H52 mid/woofer tuned to a 39Hz rear-firing port (the cutaway below still shows the ScanSpeak Illuminator) also is an ultra-performance unit most would consider on par with the ATD. Nor are BPT's components of their 2nd-order network chopped liver: Jantzen 14ga foil inductors and Jantzen Z-Superior capacitors. Upgrades are available to order such as Z-Silver capacitors and 12ga inductors, Teflon V-Cap bypass capacitors, Mundorf Silver/Gold bypass caps. Or even the use of exotic capacitors like the Clarity Cap MR or Mundorf Silver/Gold/Oil throughout the crossover, not just as bypass caps.

Finishes you ask? Virtually any real-wood veneer. For an additional $250, piano gloss lacquer over it. As far as cabinet construction goes, the curvaceous stacked Ply architecture also recalls the Magico. For a price so much lower as to raise eye brows. Next time you overhear fellow 'philes belabor the state of audiophile affairs, with pricing run amok and compromised sameness everywhere you look, ask them how much attention they've paid of late. If they stare at you with condescension, mention the BPT Cirrus. Chances are they'll stare back empty. Of course if they counter that the Cirrus is an exception which merely proves their point, you'd better have further examples at the ready. I could list the lot. But today belongs to Cirrus, the virus everyone should hope will spread far and wide. Will we review it? If Paul Candy can get a pair -- Chris Hoff is buried under requests -- you bet. Will the price go up afterwards?
You bet. By how much? No idea, that's Chris' call. If you know anything about manufacturing realities today, one look at the photo above would tell you why he has to. But for two more months, his intro offer stands solid. That seems like an insane deal if ever there was one...
