Orpheus Labs at Munich HighEnd 2015 showing their Heritage Series system.

Black Orpheus (Orfeu Negro in Portuguese) is a 1959 French film shot in Brazil. It was based on the Vinicius de Moraes play Orfeu da Conceição, itself an adaptation of the Greek Orpheus and Eurydice myth. With the film set in a Rio slum during Carnaval season, its Jobim and Bonfá soundtrack became famous and netted numerous bossa nova classics. If the film's title refers to a dark-skinned man, we can easily conjure up a paler version for Orpheus Labs, a Swiss high-end firm dedicated to the same enjoyment of good music. For the unvarnished truth, we'd of course best return to the original tale.

It's a real heart throb yarn. Our freshly married gal Eurydice frolics about with her bride's maids only to get bit by a poisonous snake. She dies on the spot. This has her musician hubby fall into an endless Blues-singing depression until manlier action does get his goat. Now he breaches the non-too-pearly gates of Death by exploiting his sunnier musical charms on the ancient lyre. Serenading numerous obstacles into submission, he finally pesters the Underworld's doyens into releasing his beloved. Hades and Persephone eventually grant his wish but attach a simple proviso: on their way back up, Orpheus must walk in front of Eurydice. He can't look at her until fully returned. The panicked history buff has visions of Lot's wife turning into a pillar of salt. Or was it pepper?

With said narrative catch, we know the story to be doomed. Quite so. Orpheus fails the condition in the final critical moment. In true sob-story fashion, Eurydice gets sucked back down under. A second attempt to rescue her fails when Cap'n Grim refuses to even take him across the river Styx. Crushed as befits a true Blues man, Orpheus henceforth roams ancient Greece whilst milking sad songs. Finally his refusal to bed some horny maidens gets him butchered in grisly fashion. No happy Hollyweird ending. Cut the tale short and it's easy to see why a modern hifi firm might want Orpheus and his lyre for their namesake and logo. The man was such a good pluck, he overcame the three-headed Cerberus hound; convinced the couple of Death to free his Eurydice; and even managed subsequent miracles when his tunes rendered deadly weapons harmless. If such be the power of music, by Agamemnon, we cannot leave it rest in ancient Greece. We must resurrect it for today. No viola da gamba but a lyre de samba for Orpheus Labs!

Now consider the members of our small but posh Swiss hifi orchestra. In alphabetical order, I count Active Audio, Audio Consulting, Audionautics, AvantGarde HighEnd (not to be confused with German hornspeaker company Avantgarde Acoustics), Boenicke Audio, CH Precision, Colotube, Credo Audio, darTZeel, DaVinci Audio Labs, Ensemble, Eternity Jo, Goldmund, Holborne, Illusonic, Job Sys, Klangwerk, Le Son, Nagra, Orpheus Labs, Pawel, Piega, PSI, Relec, ReQuest, Revox, Rowen, Soulution, soundkaos, Stenheim, Stereolith, Swissonor, Swiss Cables, Thorens, Vovox and Weiss Engineering. There might be more. Because Switzerland is a small country, it's not unusual for companies to share resources; or for personnel to move from one to the next over the course of their careers. Four former Goldmund engineers launched Stenheim before being poached by Devialet. Digital experts Anagram spawned early Audio Aero, later Orpheus Labs as demonstrator brands for their digital OEM chops. When Cambridge Audio acquired Anagram, certain of their IP migrated to ABC-PCB in Morges/Lausanne. That's a hi-tech supplier still shared by many Swiss hifi brands like CH Precision, Le Son, Nagra, Orpheus Labs and Soulution. Given natural competitive spirit, this rather speaks to Swiss civility. Or take Thierry Heeb who was at Anagram and Orpheus Labs before launching Digimath, then getting involved in CH Precision with Florian Cossy.

Also, made in Switzerland carries enormous cachet abroad. It allows—often demands—concomitant pricing for bona fide luxury branding. With the watch industry arguably our country's most famous, it's not uncommon to see individuals involved with it end up in High-End audio like at Le Son and Stenheim. Here they inform cosmetics and finishing to often extreme standards. When Orpheus Labs bowed their immaculate Absolute Media Server in Munich, I expected a ReQuest Beast commensurate tag. True, the €17'000 price actually attached to it was far from non-luxuriant. Yet for the brand and given feature set, it was a new kind of low. Whilst styled to complement their upscale Heritage range, Orpheus had positioning this model lower. I signed up to review it on the spot. A Bentley for a Lexus price still is an expensive ride but less so than feared. This would be my entry into a nearly 15-year old domestic brand which, for unknown reasons, hasn't seen much coverage in the Western press. Bypassing raclette, fondue, chäs-chüechl or flying the national flag from our balcony, here was a chance at my doing some patriotic duty; and not in French, German, Italian, Romansch or Switzerdütsch either.

The Munich show's prototype presented a serious business end to cover all eventualities and play to the 'absolute' in its name.
